Deut:1:5 --- “You have stayed long enough at this mountain. Break camp and advance ---.”

Christian pilgrimage is just that, a journey. We are naturally inclined to the sedentary lifestyle, the comfort of the familiar and often need to be awakened by God’s word to our hearts.

Is He challenging you with a new opportunity to break camp and advance? Is He asking you to move on from the comfort of the familiar?

Our Visitors

Apart from the elephants which persistently invaded our base and insisted on eating the new trees we had five first time visitors during the period from June to mid-Sept – Daphne, Catherine, Andrew, Matthew and Mark.  Catherine briefly tells her story below (edited). You can read more on the website and  next issue.

After reading prayer letters, browsing through the Kindfund website and     hearing many stories from Pamela and Ken, it was wonderful actually being with the people in Kenya. We were so privileged to see the amazing work that God has done. The children, women’s groups, old Mamas, manyattas (small villages), and beautiful scenery are all something I will never forget.
I loved just being there with the children. They were so glad of any attention we gave them. They would grab onto you and jump up and down with joy. We were fortunate enough to be able to spend time playing with and teaching the children in the nursery and primary schools at N’garemara.

I had an amazing time and would love to return and see how Kindfund’s plans and dreams for the people of this area develop.

Wamba (72 orphans): update on the plans for the Children’s Home and Glory our first resident.

glory After visiting the regional Government at Marallel in August we entered a consultative process which should complete in November when we will have good title to the 5 acre site at Wamba given by the Samburu Council. In Nairobi on 13th Sept we appointed solicitors to confirm and advise. We have selected a builder who is currently preparing a new costing and updated Bill of Quantities. He will be ready to go on site in January after the rainy season. We need to provide water and that means a deep borehole as first priority.

Glory, the first orphan in full time care has made remarkable progress and has stolen many hearts. On her feet with the help of the furniture she is ready to launch into independence. At Marallel we registered her birth 2007, and introduced her to the Children’s Officer. We have made application for Nancy to foster but in the meantime she is in our care.
Support for: Nursery Programme up from 330 to 470 children at 9 locations
Orphans 220 on daily meal and care programme.
Deaf now 8 children and for the first time Blind 3 children, 38 at Secondary schools, and 80 elderly widows.

What’s newThe Rendille:  Turn left or West half way from Archer’s Post to Marsabit (2 hours by landrover).  Follow the dirt track for 25kms around the back of the mountain ridge and arrive at Sokotei, a broad valley with a seasonal river and the first Rendille village.  Raphael, son of a Rendille father, a young vet, leaving the relative comfort of Archer’s Post has set up home in a traditional stick and skin house with his wife Lucy and two young children as he seeks to bring the Good News to this almost un reached tribe.

Another 15kms further West across seasonal rivers impassable in the rains lies a second village, Losidan where we spent 3 hours during our overnight trip. A receptive people but still bound by many traditions. In both locations we have assisted Raphael by supporting nursery education for 102 children. We presented cooking utensils and mugs for porridge. Monthly we will provide for porridge flour and a small amount of support for cooks and helpers. Further West lie more Rendille villages, beckoning us for our next visit.

The Blind Unit: Negotiations with the District Education Officer concluded with a decision to sponsor three children to board at the Blind Unit at Kambi Ya Juu Primary in Isiolo. They very much need our support. We will monitor progress closely as the existing 11 pupils are boosted to 14. Help by sponsoring one of these blind children. If supported we will expand the sponsorship in January as we have already done at the Deaf School. There are other blind and deaf children in the communities who need our help.
The unit has good equipment but has struggled with running costs

Are you a retired teacher looking for a challenge?  We have been asked by Janet to take over a 175 pupil Primary School reached through Serena Game Park. There are three teachers and a Principal running Standards 1-4. We would need the technical help and enthusiasm of the right person before committing ourselves. Janet is a lecturer at Washington University who was touched by the needs of the children when visiting the Game Park 10 yrs ago.  We enjoyed camping overnight with her and will be discussing further. Janet is aiming for a decision by January and completion by July of 2008. We would like to hear from you.
BES:  August gave Clifford, with support from the visiting team of Matthew and Mark, an opportunity to run a bible week at Ngaremara and some fun activities at Wamba and Archer’s Post.
Face painting stole the day in Wamba see the website for photographs.
We are sponsoring Clifford to a YWAM DTS course – 5 months and have recruited Kim to take over from 30 Sept.  There are a lot of opportunities to develop this work and big demands for the bible materials. Pray to the Lord of the harvest.

Children’s Home in Isiolo:  We have been asked to sponsor this home which we have been supporting modestly with occasional food and some equipment. It has 46 beautiful orphans and a caring mama now 70 yrs. We have asked Nancy to take forward discussions in our absence. Pray for the right outcome.

Jonathan has been instrumental in making contacts with the British Army Training Unit in Kenya and we are examining one or two opportunities for them to undertake projects in the longer term.

May/June 2007

1 Peter 2:9 & 10
. But you are the ones chosen by God…….. God’s instruments to do his work……….to tell others of the night and day difference he made for you – from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.

“I was a nobody, God made me a somebody.” The words of a hotel manager in Kenya as he described to us how a priest from Ireland had taken him from street boy, gave him a home, paid for his education and showed him God’s love. Now he was doing the same – giving a home to an orphan/ street child alongside his own family. Showing and practicing God’s love.

Read again Peter’s words above from The Message translation. This is the work God has given us all to do; to take the rejected, to love and care for them as God has done for us. Thank you for participating with us as we seek to cooperate with our Father’s business of turning nobodies into somebodies.

In this short prayer letter I want to share with you a little of what has been happening in Kenya since we returned home in mid March, but first today as I sat at the computer typing Pamela brought the mail with some photos from Nancy our coordinator and a very encouraging short letter from the three men who run the orphan project for us at Archers Post. There we are feeding 120 orphans daily. In January we helped two of the children to move up to Secondary School and in April we extended help to a small nursery school project with the nomadic Rendille tribe (less than 5% Christian) four hours North of Archers. I reproduce in full the letter dated 30th May:

Dear Ken and Pamela,

Hallo! Receive greetings in our Lord Jesus from Samuel, Jacob and I (Raphael, local Vet, .has the heart to help the Rendille ). We are doing very well in our both Archers Post and Rendille projects.

The main aim of this letter is to send our vote of thanks to you and all other Christians who managed to maintain the success of our projects. Mostly we thank you so much because of continuous support of our poor children through feeding programmes.

Again we also thank you so, so much for extending your generous help to sponsor our c
hildren even up to secondary level. You did a wonderful work.
Otherwise we ask our God and Father of our Lord Jesus to bless you richly. Pass our greetings to other Christians and friends.

God bless you continually.

Yours in Christ

Samuel, Jacob and Raphael.

I pray that you are all encouraged to read a first hand report confirming the difference your support is making. Rejected into accepted and nobody to somebody.

GloryWamba is the youngest of our three hubs. Just 12 months since we commenced feeding 30 orphans yet God is opening up a door. We can hear the Macedonian call, “Come over and help us,” that Paul experienced in Acts 16:9. The community and the Government Officials are very much cooperating with us and encouraging us to realize our vision for a home for the most needy orphans. We have been given a 5 acre site for the home in Wamba by the Samburu County Council. Pray for us as we go through this open door to build and establish our first home for the most deprived orphans.

Seven month old orphan Glory (photo) has been given into our care. Glory’s father died while her mother was expecting and her mother died in childbirth without seeing her. She was recently brought to the Chief at Wamba because the relatives could not look after her and he approached Nancy Kindfund coordinator. The beauty of God’s gift.

Mrs Kibaki wife of the President of Kenya has recently visited Wamba and met our 65 orphans who sang and recited poetry for her touching many hearts.

Clifford the young man we appointed to develop the Bible Education School (BES) has not been letting the grass grow under his feet. This is a three year programme of teaching all the main bible stories at four different levels. Participants are given an appropriate level work sheet to complete weekly and return for marking.) He has now over 100 participants.
Some of his comments below.

Secondary

I’ve been greatly impressed by the response of the secondary students they were so eager to attend the classes. They have done very well in their work too. The students enjoyed our outdoor volleyball court during half term in April.

Deaf school

I thought since Kindfund is supporting the deaf school we could also include them in the bible time club .I went to the school and talked to the head teacher and he agreed to allow me to have class every Friday at 11:30am.I have already asked Steve to send me 33 extra copies. The head teacher also said he will assign teacher to help me with the sign language .The Lord is expanding our territory.

Suggestion

I was for the idea that we have t shirts with the bible time logo on them .what do you think?

Clifford’s mention of the Deaf School made me recall Richard a 4 year old that we discovered at one of the nursery schools sponsored by Kindfund at a rural Turkana village. He was so timid and camera shy we had great difficulty getting his photo as he hid behind his hands. He started boarding at Deaf school in January supported by a sponsor and four weeks later we visited him to see a transformed boy. He looked so well in his uniform, sitting at the desk with the other children and already beginning to communicate with them.
Another example of rejected to accepted, from nobody to somebody.
