Kindfund supports community groups formed by local Christians to hand dig wells in the Turkana/Samburu/Rendille area between Isiolo, Wamba and Laisamis, N Kenya (A semi-arid pastoral area where clean water can mean health).

Kindfund also helps repair existing hand and wind driven pumps

Kindfund is also currently experimenting with a combination of
hand pump, small storage tank and foot pump to evaluate
if a family can become self sufficient in this environment.

At the main nursery school this system has just become operational and is initially being used to sustain a number of young trees to provide shade and fruit for the future.
Bore holes have been dug at the villages of, Ngaremara, Arioamoit, Wamba and Losai. In one community clean water is a 2 hour round trip. The Afridev hand pump was placed on the Losai borehole in Feb 08. A further borehole was dug at Losidan another Rendille village and in Aug 08 an Afridev handpump installed. Digging is underway again in Sept 08 to provide clean water at Lockshula between Laisamis and Korr. The pump has been purchased in anticipation of success.  Kindfund plans to provide other borehole as funds become available.

Digging: Cost c.£350 to hand dig a well to 60 feet and provide a concrete surround etc. giving local employment and self dignity.

Hand Pump: An Afridev basic hand pump locally installed, manufactured in Kenya and with local spares costs c £425.
