By September 2003 Ken and Pamela Dobbin had been visiting Tharaka in Eastern Province Kenya for 6 years in support of a Christian Charity based in Belfast when they received an invitation from a Turkana pastor to come North and help him show God’s love to orphans and poor children in traditional areas. Personal Profile Ken and Pamela worshipped at West Church, Bangor for 30 years. They committed themselves to many aspects of church life while raising three sons David, Jonathan and Andrew. House group leadership, missionary interest group, Sunday school and youth work were some of the areas they made long term commitments until the Lord took Pamela to Kenya in 1998 and everything began to change. The boys were grown up and away from home, Ken had 5 years to go to retire at 60 and God was preparing the way ahead. In 2001 Ken and Pamela moved unexpectedly but in God’s plan to Co. Fermanagh where they worship at the local Parish Church. Ken retired in 2004 and they both devote their time to serving the Lord at home and in Kenya. They have two granddaughters, Melissa and Amy. Getting Started Their first visit in Feb 04 to NE Kenya, a dry pastoral area recovering from some years of ‘trouble’ led to the establishment of Kindfund. As a result of this and further visits. Kindfund supports 1,500+ children and adults: –in 15 villages 700 nursery school children from very poor circumstances (providing 3-6yr olds daily porridge and school uniforms, support for the teachers and cooks), - 38 jobs, - 266 orphans and poor primary age children with 1 meal per day, - 2 classroom assistants at the local primary schools (to help reduce the class size), - 38 young people ( including 19 new in 2008 ) boarding through secondary education and Polytechnic (three at special school for the deaf in Central Province), - 10 deaf children boarding at Isiolo nursery and primary school for the hearing impaired and a Secondary school for the deaf, - 1 Deaf young lady through training as a tailoress including providing her with a singer treadle sewing machine, now employed by Kindfund making school uniforms and other tailoring jobs, - 14 Blind/partially sighted children boarding at the Blind Unit attached to Kambi Ya Juu Primary School Isiolo. This is a private unit and Kindfund has assumed the role of main sponsor for feeding and equipping the children and maintenance of the premises. The Human Rights Commissioners have asked us to become trustees of this unit along with Kisima Farm, - 80 elderly, mainly widows with 1kg of maize flour per week - many poor through medical treatment at local clinics and hospitals, and - BES Bible Club bringing the scriptures to young people on the programme .
![]() Kindfund has financed: - a building with two permanent classrooms a kitchen and store, - Beds, mattresses, sheets, and furnishings for childrens homes' - Repair of two solar lighting systems at childrens homes' Kindfund is working at: - the best support for orphans at N’garemara, Archer’s Post and Wamba in North Kenya including a first home for orphans at Wamba where the Samburu County Council has granted a 5 acre site to Kind Fund Society, Kenya to develop a 48 bed home for the most desperate orphan children. This will be our major project for 07/08 with builders on site from 13th |March. The main home is now complete at September 08. We have also been asked to assist in a children's home for 46 orphans in Isiolo. We are working with management to improve the conditions for the children and provide support by way of food. Starting in September the British Army have agreed to build a kitchen and store for the Kindfund Project at Archers Post as a community project. We are: - helping Turkana and Samburu women’s groups become self sufficient, Kindfund at Dec 07 has been asked to assume responsibility for a 150 child primary school with four classes. The school is inside our current working area but would be something new. It will require a monthly budget of c £600 to support. We would like someone at home to take an interest in this opportunity which will see c.45 children pass through 4/5 yrs of education under our management. Perhaps a teacher or someone from the field of education or just someone with a heart for the opportunity to input into these young lives. |
