Child Sponsorship – What’s the value of a child?

Background

Child sponsorship brings a direct link between the sponsor and a child in the project the sponsor is supporting. At its best this can produce a living relationship between the sponsor and the child within certain bounds. The sponsor develops a personal commitment to the project and the project benefits from a long term commitment to funding. The sponsor is supporting the child indirectly through the project.

We are happy to arrange for such a link between a sponsor and a child on the project and we do this by taking regular photographs of the sponsored child and arranging for them to draw or write for the sponsor. We have been able to take photographs of the sponsor to the sponsored children and in other small ways promote a relationship.

  • Nursery children can be sponsored from £5/€8/$10 per month for a period of 3 years when the child will normally move to primary school, and off our direct programme. Sponsors will at this point be offered the opportunity to continue with a new child.
  • Orphans on the daily  feeding programmes can be sponsored from £10/€15/$20 per month; those living in the homes from £20/€29/$40 per month.
  • Deaf/Blind/handicapped from £15/€22/$30 per month and;
  • Secondary School Bursaries from £20/€29/$40 per month.

The funding ensures a regular flow of finance to the running costs of the project providing food, uniforms, materials and utensils and supporting salaries. In the case of the Nursery Schools the money is used to provide porridge, part fund the teacher, cook, for uniforms and the upkeep of the building. Similarly for the orphans we are feeding one meal per day, uniforms are provided for those who can be encouraged to attend school and some medical expenses are met.

In 2007 we began to provide food and support to a children’s home for 46 children in Isiolo and in 2008 we opened a purpose built 48 bed children’s home in a beautiful location at Wamba for the most needy orphans many of whom have been living ‘home alone. In Feb/March 2009 we have further developed our main base at Ngaremara to start a rescue centre for young teenage girls at risk and a home for the most needy orphans on our feeding programme there. In April 2010 we will complete a new purpose built 50 bed Children's Home at Ngaremara. Seven teenage girls have been brought on an 18 month work training course living on our sites at Wamba and Ngaremara.

Deaf children discovered in remote villages are funded to board at the Isiolo school for the Deaf as funds permit.

In 2007 we funded 3 Blind Children at an Integrated Primary School. On our first visit in 2008 we became the main sponsors for this unit feeding 14 visually impaired children and improving their living conditions.

Other young people are being funded to secondary schools. In Kenya in most cases this means boarding.

Kindfund now supports:

  • 15 nursery school, 700+ children,

  • 54 children in two Kindfund homes and 74 children in a sponsored home,
  • 28 to secondary education,

  • 7 young children from remote villages to Isiolo Primary school for the deaf, and

  • 15 blind children to Isiolo school for the blind,

  • 200 orphans on our daily meal programme,  and

  • 130 elderly in our weekly food support programme.

If you would like to help with any programme please contact us.

You can download forms from our website at How to Help or ask us for the relevant forms. The application form asks you for details of the monthly amount you will contribute and when you wish to start the sponsorship, your preference for a boy or girl, Nursery or Orphan etc. When you have completed the application form, the monthly standing order form and the Gift Aid form (for UK if appropriate) forward all to Kindfund. If you are a tax payer in the UK gift aid will add 25% to the value of your gift. We will send you details of a child, photograph and a short project write up to begin your relationship. We will then keep you in touch through our bi-monthly prayer letter and bi-annual reports on the child.
